CHAPTER 12
Jim arrived before the police did, pounding on my glass door and causing my heart to jump up into my throat. I’d finished flushing the last of the paper towels covered with Nina’s blood, and had checked the hallway carpet and the walls. Amazingly, there was no blood from Nina’s wound visible anywhere, just the bullet from Salvatici’s gun lodged in the wall. I knew the crime scene techs would glove up before removing it, so Nina’s blood on the slug wouldn’t pose any threat.
I’d bagged my used surgical gloves and disposed of them in the kitchenette trash can, under the sink. There would be no reason for the police to look there. I really didn’t want anyone to know that I’d cleaned and bandaged Nina’s bullet wound before sending her on her way, but the truth was that after she’d left I’d decided I was done chasing Nina Jezek, unless she changed her MO and started killing non-sexual-predators. Then all bets were off.
I let Jim inside and locked the doors behind him as he drew his gun and scanned the office.
“What the hell happened?” he asked, staring at the dead guy on the floor.
“He came in while I was on the phone with you.” I pointed to the suppressed weapon still in Salvatici’s hand. “To kill me, I assume. He was walking me down the hallway to the bathroom when Nina stepped out and told me to duck. I hit the floor and she shot him in the chest. He got off a round that hit her in the upper arm. How did you know he was coming here?”
“My team on Salvatici called in. Remember I said I’d have someone watching the back of his house?”
I nodded.
“Well my guy spotted him slipping out the gate in his backyard, so he ran back to the car where my other agent was waiting and found both rear tires had been slashed.”
“Nina?”
“She has done it before. They only had one spare, so they had to call a tow truck. They should have called me first. Anyway, it occurred to me that Abetha’s son might have decided to use you as bait. After the news leaked that Nina had brought that little girl to you for help, a lot of people assumed you were friends.”
“I think we kind of are. She saved my life tonight.”
“Police on the way?” Jim asked.
“Yeah.”
“What are you going to tell them?”
“The truth. But I might leave out a few details.”
“Like Nina’s name?”
“Maybe.”
“Because she saved your life?”
“That, and this guy really needed killing. There’s no telling how long he would have gone on victimizing innocent children and murdering people for money if Nina hadn’t stopped him. He was a diseased cockroach of a human being.”
“Judge and jury, Ms. Hunter?” Jim smiled to soften his words.
“What would you do?” I asked.
Jim put his arm around my shoulders. “Follow your heart, Nikki. Trust your gut.”
“Make up your fucking mind,” I said, leaning against him.
Jim laughed, and we heard sirens in the distance.
